Inlays and Onlays

Information About This Service

Inlays and onlays are strong, custom-made restorations used to repair teeth that are decayed, cracked, or broken. Unlike regular fillings, they are created outside of the mouth in a dental laboratory and then securely bonded to the tooth. This makes the treated tooth strong, durable, and fully functional again.

Inlays and onlays are most commonly used on premolars and molars (the back teeth), especially when the damage is too extensive for a simple filling but not severe enough to require a crown.

What is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?

  • Inlay – An inlay is designed to fit inside the chewing surface of the tooth. It is typically used when the cavity is too large for a filling but does not affect the cusps (the raised points on the biting surface).
  • Onlay – An onlay covers a larger area than an inlay. In addition to repairing the central chewing surface, it also restores one or more cusps of the tooth, providing extra strength and protection.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

  • Strong and durable – Made from high-quality materials, inlays and onlays are stronger and longer-lasting than traditional fillings.
  • Natural appearance – They can be made from tooth-coloured porcelain or composite, blending seamlessly with your natural teeth.
  • Preserve more healthy tooth structure – Unlike crowns, inlays and onlays only replace the damaged part of the tooth, helping to keep more of your natural tooth intact.
  • Improved fit and comfort – Because they are custom-made, inlays and onlays fit your tooth precisely, providing excellent stability and function.
  • Long-lasting solution – With proper care, inlays and onlays can last many years, offering a reliable restoration for damaged teeth.
